# FAQ

### My import shows zero highlights found

This usually means the uploaded file wasn't in the expected format. Check that:

* You selected the actual `My Clippings.txt` or exported `.html` file, not a folder or a renamed file.
* The file isn't empty — open it in a text editor to confirm it contains your highlights.
* For `My Clippings.txt`, the file hasn't been edited or re-saved by another app, which can change its encoding.

### Will importing the same file twice create duplicates?

No. AfterWord checks for near-duplicate highlights before inserting anything new, so re-importing the same `My Clippings.txt` after your next reading session is safe — only new highlights since your last import will be added.

### How long does an import take?

Most imports finish in under a minute, even for files with thousands of highlights. Very large files may take a few minutes; you can keep using the app while it processes and you'll be notified when it's done.

### Some of my highlights are missing a book cover or author

AfterWord automatically tries to match each book against Open Library in the background to fill in covers, descriptions, and publication details. This can take a little longer than the highlight import itself. If a match still isn't found after a while, you can search and match it manually from the book's detail page.

### Is my data private?

Yes. Your highlights, notes, and library are scoped to your account and are not visible to other users.

### I read on a device or app that isn't listed here

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://afterword.gitbook.io/afterword-docs/faq.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
