# Kindle MyClippings.txt

Every physical Kindle keeps a single running text file of everything you've ever highlighted, called `My Clippings.txt`. This is the easiest way to bring years of reading into AfterWord in one shot.

### Step 1: Connect your Kindle to a computer

Plug your Kindle into your computer with a USB cable. It should appear as an external drive named **Kindle**.

{% hint style="warning" %}
This step requires a computer — you can't access this file directly from the Kindle device itself. If you only have a phone, see the [Kindle App: HTML Export](broken://pages/7ffed68c903dbd2277d3be28228ffea1c9f52f94) method instead.
{% endhint %}

### Step 2: Find My Clippings.txt

Open the Kindle drive and look in the **documents** folder. You'll find a file called:

```
My Clippings.txt
```

Copy this file to somewhere easy to find, like your Desktop or Downloads folder.

### Step 3: Upload to AfterWord

1. Open AfterWord and go to the **Upload** tab.
2. Tap **Import from File** and select the `My Clippings.txt` file.
3. AfterWord will start processing in the background — you'll see a progress indicator as it parses, matches books, and generates search embeddings.
4. You can close the app or keep browsing; you'll be notified when the import finishes.

### What to expect

* Every highlight, note, and location marker in the file gets parsed automatically.
* Books are matched or created automatically based on title and author.
* If you've imported this file before, AfterWord will skip highlights it's already seen rather than duplicating them — so it's safe to re-import the same file after your next reading session.

### Troubleshooting

If the import fails or shows zero highlights found, see the [FAQ & Troubleshooting](broken://pages/452b0babce85b85b23d2ba28f411c359b4c6a229) page.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://afterword.gitbook.io/afterword-docs/importing-your-highlights/kindle-myclippings.txt.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
