# Quickstart

Get from a fresh install to a searchable library in a few minutes.

### 1. Create your account

Download AfterWord and sign up with your email. Your library is private to you — no one else can see your highlights or notes.

### 2. Import your highlights

This is the fastest way to make AfterWord feel useful right away. Choose the method that matches how you read:

{% content-ref url="/pages/c3be485188ede0f8aff162eb24d43327dbb7cd2c" %}
[Broken mention](broken://pages/c3be485188ede0f8aff162eb24d43327dbb7cd2c)
{% endcontent-ref %}

{% hint style="info" %}
Already have years of Kindle highlights sitting untouched? Start there — it usually takes less than five minutes and instantly populates your library.
{% endhint %}

### 3. Explore your library

Once your highlights are in:

* **Library tab** — browse by book, see covers and highlight counts.
* **Highlights tab** — scroll everything at once, filter by tag or favorite.
* **Search tab** — search by concept, not just keyword. Try searching for an idea instead of an exact phrase.
* **Home tab** — check back daily for a resurfaced highlight from your own library.

### 4. Organize as you go

Add tags to highlights as you read them so you can group ideas across books later. You don't need to do this up front — most people tag retroactively once they see what themes emerge.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://afterword.gitbook.io/afterword-docs/quickstart.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
