# README

## What is AfterWord?

AfterWord is a personal knowledge management app for readers. It's a home for every highlight, note, and idea you've pulled from a book — searchable, connected, and resurfaced back to you over time so what you read actually sticks.

## Why does this app exist?

Most of us highlight constantly and remember almost none of it. Highlights get stranded on a device, in an app you never reopen, or in a notebook you'll never scan back through. AfterWord exists to turn that scattered pile into a living library you actually return to.

## How is it different from other highlight apps?

AfterWord is built on a few core ideas:

1. **Bring your highlights from wherever you already read** — Kindle, e-ink readers running KOReader, or typed in by hand. You shouldn't have to change how you read to start using it.
2. **Highlights should resurface, not disappear** — a spaced-repetition feed brings old highlights back to you so they don't just sit in an archive.
3. **Your library should connect itself** — semantic search and a knowledge map surface the links between books, authors, and ideas that you'd never find by scrolling.

## Who should use AfterWord?

If you highlight a lot and forget most of it, AfterWord gives that habit somewhere to go. If you've already got years of Kindle or e-reader clippings sitting untouched, this is the fastest way to make them useful again.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://afterword.gitbook.io/afterword-docs/readme.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
